What happened on July 12th, 1998? Well, at 21hrs, there was the final of the World Cup. France went on to win the game thanks to a brace by Zidane and a late strike by Petit. Afterwards a whole nation believed in unification, celebrating the win across the country.
Hours earlier, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos were sharing room 209 at the Château de la Grande Romaine, Brazil’s basecamp during the World Cup. That day Ronaldo had a fit. The striker with four goals to his account would never really recover, but he figured in the lineup replacing Edmundo, who had initially been in the starting line up.
At lunch, the Carioca player ate a steak, salad, mashed potatoes, rice and beans. Around 13h Ronaldo took a nap, it would last three hours. After a shower, Ronaldo felt stiff. Then versions diverge: did he have some kind of fit? Was he stressed out?
By all means, Ronaldo emerged from the bowls of the stadium and lost the final 3-0.
