A proposal has been made to add play-offs to the end of the Brasileirão campaign, according to reports.
Various media outlets suggest that there is a desire to explore the possibility of having semi-finals and a final to determine an overall winner, with the 38 home and away matches and 20 team league structure remaining in place.
The idea, which was put forward by Bahia state federation President Ednaldo Rodrigues, is reported by Folha de S.Paulo to be supported by a majority of the club’s presidents, as well as television broadcaster O Globo, while any definitive proposal would need to be submitted before August.
Despite their apparently being a strong desire for this change to be implemented, it is also reported that 14 of the 20 Head Coach’s that will start this year’s Brasileirão are against it.
Amongst those who disagree with the alteration are high profile tacticians Vanderlei Luxemburgo and Oswaldo de Oliveira, who manage Flamengo and Palmeiras respectively.
If an agreement can be found that satisfies all parties, then the Brazilian Football Confederation [CBF] could implement the play-off system, which was last used in 2003, for the 2016 season.
