Fernandinho has insisted he missed Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Leicester City due to injury.

The midfielder, along with Samir Nasri, was left out of the squad for the game at Etihad Stadium and though reports suggested he had been dropped, Fernandinho notes that was actually injured and unable to partake.

“I had a calf injury and wasn’t feeling very well, so I didn’t actually train during the week,” he said, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

Fernandinho is expected to return for City’s Premier League tie at Burnley on Saturday. The title holders face Barcelona in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in mid-week, but despite the magnitude of that contest, Fernandinho maintains the focus will be on first beating Burnley.

“Often, the smallest teams are the most difficult to break down, as we found when we were beating Burnley at home and ended up drawing,” he noted.

“This game is extremely important for us and we need to be at our best.”

Fernandinho was signed by Manchester City from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported fee of €40 million in July 2013. This season, he has scored twice in 33 appearances.
