Lucas Silva could be set to make his first Real Madrid start in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Schalke 04 at Veltins-Arena, according to reports.

AS, as cited by website Football Espana, claims that manager Carlo Ancelotti is considering fielding Lucas in a midfield three alongside Germany international Toni Kroos and Isco.

The Italian used Asier Illarramendi in that role during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Deportivo, with Lucas making his Real debut as a substitute for the Spaniard on 71 minutes.

It is believed however, that Ancelotti has reservations regarding Illarramendi’s suitability for Champions League games and with Luka Modrić, Sami Khedira and James Rodríguez injured, it seems Lucas could get his chance.

The 22 year-old was reportedly not requested by Ancelotti when he was signed by Real from Cruzeiro in January for a reported fee of €13 million.

His arrival is said to have been pushed for by club officials, who feared potential complications over third party investment, which is set to be allowed by FIFA in May, if they stalled until the summer.

As a result of this, Lucas has had to be patient and was an unused substitute for the matches with Sevilla and Atlético de Madrid, before getting on against Deportivo.
