Grêmio manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has explained why he walked out of his side’s 1-0 defeat to Veranópolis in the Campeonato Gaúcho.

The 66 year-old chose to leave the dugout and return to the dressing room with four minutes of the match remaining at Arena do Grêmio.

Speaking after the contest had concluded, Scolari suggested that he wanted to "cool down" and maintain his composure.

"I sent myself off," he said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

"It"s impossible to be more embarrassed than that. There was nothing more I could do so I went to the dressing room. There were three or four minutes left so I wanted to cool down and make sure I didn"t do something I shouldn’t."

In an interview with Sportv, 1970 FIFA World Cup winner Carlos Alberto Torres questioned whether Scolari would have reacted similarly when in charge of Brazil at last summer’s tournament.

"Imagine if he did that at the Mineirão [Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto] in the 7-1 against Germany [in the semi-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup]," he stated. "Would he have the guts to do that and walk out on the Brazil team?"

Scolari’s side have now lost three of their last four matches and are having to cope with the loss of key forward Hernán Barcos, who joined Tianjin Teda for a reported fee of €2.65 million earlier this month.
