Toronto FC forward Gilberto is close to securing a loan move to Vasco da Gama, according to reports.

Globoesporte, as cited by website MLSGB, suggests that the 25 year-old will join Gigante da Colina on a season long temporary deal, with an option to make the switch permanent at the end of the campaign.

Gilberto signed for Toronto FC in December 2013 from Internacional and managed seven goals in 30 appearances last term.

The arrival of Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore from Juventus and Sunderland respectively has however, seemingly forced him out.

Major League Soccer regulations dictate that clubs are only allowed to register three Designated Players and with Michael Bradley, Altidore, Giovinco and Gilberto taking Toronto’s number of DP’s to four, the Brazilian was always likely to be pushed out.

With a new employer his priority, Gilberto has reportedly been training with Vasco for the past month and the Brasileirão newcomers are expected to cover all his wages, which will include a pay-cut, to ensure the deal happens.

Gilberto has scored 23 goals in 71 Brasileirão appearances throughout his career to date across spells at Internacional, Sport Recife and Portuguesa and will bring top flight experience to Head Coach Doriva’s squad.
