Napoli have remerged as possible suitors for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, according to reports.

Website Mirror claims that the Reds’ manager Brendan Rodgers is eyeing up a move for Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph, whose contract expires in June, and is willing to sell Lucas if a deal can be secured this month.

The Brazil international [24 caps] has been strongly linked with a switch to Internazionale in recent weeks, but with the Nerazzurri seemingly more keen on Atlético de Madrid’s Mario Suárez, concrete negotiations are yet to materialise.

Lucas – a reported €10 million signing from Grêmio in July 2007 – now finds himself paired once more with a move to Napoli.

The Serie A outfit, who are managed by Rafael Benítez – the Coach who brought Lucas to Liverpool – are believed to have enquired about him last summer, though eventually signed Espanyol’s David López instead.

At the time, Lucas was considered to be on the fringes at Liverpool and though that continued into this season, he has since come back into favour and has now made 19 appearances in all competitions.

With Delph reportedly seen as a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard, who will retire at the end of the season, the correlation between his potential arrival and a possible departure for Lucas is not clear, while a reunion with Benítez at Napoli could be short-lived, as the tactician is not guaranteed to remain in his role beyond the current campaign.
