Fiorentina have released a statement confirming that goalkeeper Neto will not be renewing his contract.

The 26 year-old’s current deal with La Viola expires in June and after months of speculation surrounding whether he will extend that agreement, it seems he has decided to move on.

“ACF Fiorentina must announce that goalkeeper Norberto Murara Neto today officially informed the club of his intention not to prolong his contract with the Viola. The decision is definitive,” read a club statement, as reported by website Football Italia.

“Neto was keen to make it known that his decision is entirely unrelated to financial motivations, with his desire to be free to decide his own future the sole reason behind his move.”

Reports suggest Fiorentina will attempt to sell Neto this month to avoid losing him on a free transfer, though the former Brazil U-23 international could choose to see out the season, perhaps as a reserve, and have his pick of potential suitors – Juventus, Liverpool and Roma have been linked – in the summer.

Neto was signed by Fiorentina from Atlético Paranaense in January 2011 for a reported fee of €3.5 million.

The Araxá native has gone on to make 79 appearances for the club and has been the undisputed first choice goalkeeper since Head Coach Vincenzo Montella’s arrival in June 2012.

With Neto now set to depart, the tactician could turn to Romanian stopper Ciprian Tătărușanu or veteran Cristiano Lupatelli to fill in.
