Botafogo Football Manager Antonio Lopes has denied that forward Sebastián Abreu could be set to return to the club.

The 38 year-old, who scored 26 goals in 70 appearances for Uruguay between 1996 and 2012, is currently a free agent after leaving Primera División outfit Rosario Central and is reported to have met Botafogo officials in Montevideo last week.

Despite this suggestion however, Lopes insists Abreu will not be re-signed.

“There is no plan for Loco Abreu to return," he told reporters on Friday, as reported by website China. “His name hasn"t been mentioned in our discussions."

During his previous spell with Botafogo [January 2010 – January 2013], Abreu netted 24 goals in 52 appearances and was part of a side that won the 2010 Campeonato Carioca.

He was loaned to Figueirense in July 2012 and eventually left to join Uruguayan club Nacional in January 2013, before moving on to Rosario in August of the same year.

Abreu’s record with La Academia Rosarina was eight goals in 40 appearances and a player with his experience – he"s played for over 15 different clubs – could be a useful addition to a Botafogo side that is looking to earn promotion back to the Brasileirão at the first attempt.
