Ronaldo has backed Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo to win the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or.

The former Brazil international, who was named FIFA World Player of the Year [1996, 1997, 2002] three times and won the Ballon d’Or [1997, 2002] twice, sees his namesake as the outstanding candidate for this year’s edition, ahead of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

“Cristiano"s the best striker in the world," he told RMTV, as reported by Football Espana. "He does what people like to see, score goals. The supporters enjoy it as much as I do.

“What he"s doing is amazing. His numbers were unthinkable in my day, but he deserves them.

“He has great quality and cleverly exploits the opposition. It"s amazing to see him play. He combines his technical quality with physical strength very well.

“I think it"s clear that this year Cristiano will win [the FIFA Ballon d"Or] again."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 51 goals in 47 appearances last season to help Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey.

This term, the 29 year-old, who was signed from Manchester United for a reported fee of €94 million in July 2009, has so far netted 30 times in 22 appearances and won the UEFA Super Cup.

If Ronaldo wins this year’s FIFA Ballon d’Or, it will be his second in succession. He has also previously won the 2008 Ballon d’Or and was named the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year.
