Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has played down the impact that Diego Costa has had on the club since joining from Atletico Madrid in the summer.

The Brazilian-born Spain international has hit the ground running since his £32m switch in the summer, racking up 11 Premier League goals in just 13 appearances.

However, Mourinho preferred to spread the plaudits across his entire team ahead of their Champions League clash with Schalke on Tuesday.

‘Without the team Diego has behind him Diego is nothing,’ he told the club’s official website. ‘He’s playing well and scoring goals but the team is producing a lot.

‘It’s not fair to speak about individuals when the team is very good. You look to our team and the players we brought in – Thibaut (Courtois), (Cesc) Fabregas, Diego, Filipe (Luis) – and all of them are improving the team.’
