Brazil captain Neymar has explained why he gave the armband to ex-skipper Thiago Silva after he was withdrawn in their 2-1 win over Austria on Tuesday.

Dunga replaced Neymar with Marquinhos late on and the newly-appointed skipper gave the captaincy duties to Silva as he departed.

Silva recently publicly expressed his disappointment with losing the armband after the World Cup, and Neymar revealed why he handed the duties back to his colleague after the game.

The Barcelona forward said: ‘I decided in the moment like everybody does. Sometimes that choice is luck, sometimes by the leadership on the field and this time I chose Thiago Silva.

‘It was not about what happened. It’s because he was wearing the captain’s armband before, he’s a leader in the field and that’s important to us. That’s why I chose him.’
