Atlético Mineiro have released Brazil international Jô following a “serious” breach of team rules.

The former Everton and Manchester City attacker played 45 minutes for the Galāo da Massa in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Atlético Paranaense, but the club have now confirmed that he’s been sacked.

What Jô has done to warrant such a strict punishment is currently unclear. The 27 year-old had previously been warned about missing training sessions, though he insisted his absense was due to family problems.

Whether that influenced Atlético official’s decision following was seems to have been a further indiscretion has not as yet been made public.

Jô joined Atlético Mineiro from Internacional for €2.5 million in May 2012. Since then, he has scored 27 goals in 89 appearances and won the 2012 Campeonato Mineiro and 2013 Copa Libertadores. His good form for the Belo Horizonte based club also earned him a place in the Brazil squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
