Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has hinted that his future may be elsewhere after admitting: ‘sometimes, a change is welcome."

The Brazilian has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield after seeing Steven Gerrard take the defensive role in the Reds" engine room.

Lucas has struggled to establish himself in the first team since the skipper was handed the role by manager Brendan Rodgers, and the 27-year-old has been linked with a reunion with former boss Rafael Benitez at Napoli.

Speaking to Lancenet, Lucas said: ‘I have a love and a huge respect for Liverpool as well as my teammates, but sometimes, a change is welcome. Let"s wait and analyse to see what will be good for everyone."

Lucas also dismissed some supposed pre-conceptions surrounding Mario Balotelli and claimed that the Italian will come good at Anfield.

‘He is a strong personality and a strong man," added Lucas. ‘Sometimes [people from outside] think he is disrespectful and uncompromising."

‘But this is not [true]. He is a good person and I hope that he will help us this season."
