Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes current Blues forward Diego Costa was given his first test proper examination in English football by Manchester City.

The 34 year-old, who is on loan at the Citizens from New York City, notes that team-mate Vincent Kompany enjoyed going up against Costa, though concedes the Spain international still managed to create a clear opening.

I know Vincent Kompany pretty well now and he saw playing against him as a challenge,” he told Sky Sports.

“Diego Costa probably walked into this league and thought it’s very good, but the Man City game was the one game where people stood up and fought back at him. He got through once and hit the post and that’s the quality of the player.”

Lampard netted a late equaliser to rescue a 1-1 for City against Chelsea, though the latter have a five point advantage over their rivals at the top of the Premier League.
