Bayern Munich defender Dante has praised Spaniard Xabi Alonso but admitted he didn’t expect the midfielder to join the German club this summer.

Alonso’s switch from Real Madrid to the Bundesliga champions surprised quite a few, especially considering his previous history with coach Pep Guardialo.

The Brazilian admitted he foresaw the transfer of Mehdi Benatia from Roma but did not see the former Liverpool ace joining.

The 32-year-old spoke to TZ, with Goal.com quoting him on the ability Alonso has.

Dante said: “With Mehdi Benatia I wasn’t surprised. But with Xabi Alonso it all happened incredibly fast and we knew nothing about it in advance.

“We are playing in three competitions and want to win all three, so we need a lot of players.

“I stand by my opinion – when players come with the quality of Xabi or Mehdi, it is always good.”

Dante has only trained with Alonso a couple of times but was hugely impressed with the Spaniard when he featured against Schalke recently.

The Brazilian added: “I’ve only trained with him a few times but in the game against Schalke you already saw that he is a great personality.

“Xabi has an incredible amount of experience and can help us right away.”
