Ronaldo Fenômeno has described Pelé"s assessment of the Aranha racism case as "disastrous".

The Santos goalkeeper was the victim of racist abuse during a Copa do Brasil tie against Grêmio on August 28. Grêmio have since been expelled from the competition.

Pelé subsequently gave an interview on September 10 criticising the behaviour of the goalkeeper, claiming he "contributed to promote this type of racism."

Ronaldo earlier today defended Aranha. "I thought it was disastrous [the comments made by Pelé]. Someone who suffers an act of racism has to report it, they have to do their duty as a citizen," the former Seleção No. 9 said.

Ronaldo also spoke out in favour of punishments for those found guilty of racist behaviour. "Everyone has to be against any act of racism and be aware that they are very old and out of date acts. People have to be punished for the crimes they commit," he added.

Pelé said that during his career he was racially abused on several occasions and never reported it.
