Cruzeiro coach Marcelo Oliveira has admitted that São Paulo deserved to beat his side yesterday afternoon.

In the highly anticipated meeting between the Campeonato Brasileiro’s top two teams, the Tricolor Paulista emerged 2-0 winners at the Estádio Morumbi, helped in no small part no a majestic performance from playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso. Now, the gap between first and second place in the table has been cut to just four points.

“Cruzeiro also had chances, we also fought a lot in the offensive third, and we chose the worst option when trying to score. But if analyse the game as a whole, São Paulo were deserved winners,” Oliveira said after the final whistle.

The Cruzeiro boss also admitted that his players were suffering from the effects of a recent marathon of games over recent weeks. Just last week, the reigning Brasileirão champions struggled to beat relegation threatened Bahia 2-1 at the Mineirão.

“I think the players felt the effects of the trip and playing two games in such a short space of time,” he added.

He has also warned his players to avoid further slip-ups during the Brasileirão run-in. São Paulo are in excellent form, and are now unbeaten in nine games as the domestic campaign reaches the business end of the season.
