The goalkeeper who was a victim of racist abuse in a Brazilian Série D match is considering psychological help in overcoming the trauma.

Igor, who plays for fourth division side Operário-MT, was threatened and insulted racially in a league match against Tombense-MG on Sunday, September 7.

“I have a daughter, a family. It is a humiliating situation for them as well. I never thought that something like this could happen to me,” the goalkeeper told Folha de São Paulo.

Having been mocked for his skin colour and called a “monkey,” just like Santos goalkeeper Aranha in a Copa do Brasil tie against Grêmio, Igor reported the case, and referee Antônio Carvalho Schneider included the incident in his match report.

Igor was revolted at the time with the belief that the offending supporters would not be punished, as well as at the red card he received for kicking the ball in the direction of the fans insulting him.

“There were 10 or 15 fans shouting, calling me a monkey, amongst other things. I memorised the face of one of them because it would be easier.

“But what is going to happen to him? Nothing. He humiliated me because I am black. Until now I don’t know how to explain this to my family,” he said.
