Dunga beat off competition from Tite, Muricy Ramalho and Marcelo Oliveira, Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) co-ordinator Gilmar Rinaldi revealed today.

"We saw that there were many competent Brazilians in the market. Marcelo Oliveira [the Cruzeiro coach], who I know particularly well and is my friend; Tite, who has excellent quality; and Muricy [Ramalho].

But with the current profile of the Seleção, we came to the conclusion that the right man was Dunga," Rinaldi said in an interview with Folha de São Paulo.

The decision has surprised some in Brazil due to Dunga"s perceived lack of experience. Apart from coaching Brazil between 2006 and 2010, his only other job in football was taking charge of Internacional last year.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Oliveira won the 2013 Campeonato Brasileiro at a canter and his team are top of this year"s table at the halfway stage.

Tite won the 2011 Campeonato Brasileiro with Corinthians, the 2012 Copa Libertadores and the 2012 FIFA World Club Cup, beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final.

And Muricy Ramalho became the first coach in history to win three successive Brasileirão titles. He achieved the feat with São Paulo between 2006 and 2008. In addition, he won the 2010 Campeonato Brasileiro with Fluminense and the 2011 Copa Libertadores with Santos.
