Fluminense are in negotiations to sigh ABC right-back Renato.

The transfer could be finalised within the next 24 hours as the Laranjeiras outfit desperately seek to bolster a defence that is conceding goals for fun.

The 24-year-old is currently playing on loan with Sport Recife, in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, but a move to Rio de Janeiro looks increasingly likely. The defender has a release clause in his contract should a first division club seek to sign him.

Flu right-back Bruno has been the subject of fan ire over recent weeks and was booed vociferously when substituted for Kenedy during Sunday’s 3-3 draw with league leaders Cruzeiro.

Fluminense, who are fifth in the Brasileirão table, two points off a place in the G-4, are now waiting for an answer from Sport, who in turn are negotiating with Renato’s parent club, ABC, based in Natal.

If no deal can be reached with Sport, the Carioca club are also assessing the situation of América-RN full-back Marcelinho, but club directors remain confident, for the time being at least, that a deal can be reached to bring Renato to Laranjeiras, according to Brazilian sports daily Lance!

Yesterday, the club also signed goalkeeper Júlio César, from Spanish club Granada, afer contract negotiations with first-choice stopper Diego Cavalieri stalled.
