Palmeiras have sacked coach Ricardo Gareca with the club perilously close to the relegation zone.

This afternoon, the club posted a message on their official website. “Ricardo Gareca is no longer the coach of Palmeiras.

“Gareca was in charge since the end of June, and in that time obtained four wins, a draw and eight defeats in 13 games. Palmeiras Football Club thanks him for his services and wishes hin luck with his future career.”

The Argentine had been in the post less than three months, and managed just one win in the Campeonato Brasileiro during his tenure. In nine games in which he took charge of the Paulista club, Palmeiras managed to collect just four points – one win, one draw and seven defeats.

In total, Gareca managed four victories from his 13 games in charge. The last straw came when the side lost at home to Internacional on Saturday after another lacklustre display.

With 18 games played in the league, Palmeiras have 17 points, with the club only above Coritiba due to matches won.

Alberto Valentim should take charge of the side for their Copa do Brasil tie against Atletico-MG on Thursday. Palmeiras trail 1-0 from the first leg, played at home.

Coach Dorival Junior, who took charge of Rio de Janeiro club Fluminense for the final five games of last season, is one of the early favourites for the Palmeiras hotseat.
