Neymar set to miss Barcelona’s La Liga opener
Brazil and Barcelona star Neymar is a doubt for the opening game of the La Liga season after suffering a Grade 1 sprain to his left ankle in training.
The news is especially disappointing considering the 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive return to the first team fold with Barcelona against Mexican side FC Leon earlier in the week.
The forward scored twice in his first 45 minutes of the new season after recovering from a back injury sustained in the World Cup.
Many fans were optimistic about Neymar’s form ahead of the new campaign and this latest blow will disappoint the player and his adoring fans.
The news was confirmed this morning after Barcelona published a statement, it read: “Following the Thursday training session Neymar complained about some pain in his left ankle, and tests have confirmed the player has a Grade 1 ankle sprain.
“The club’s medical team has indicated that his return to training will depend on how the injury treatment evolves.”
The news means Neymar is almost certain to miss Sunday’s La Liga opener against Elche and he will hope to recover in time for the visit to Villarreal on 31st of August.
