New Brazil head coach Dunga names just ten players selected for World Cup in his squad for September friendlies
New Brazil head coach Dunga named his first national team squad since returning to the helm this afternoon and made a number of surprise picks for the friendlies against Colombia and Ecuador.
Dunga, who was in charge of Seleção between 2006 and 2010, has unsurprisingly only picked 10 players in his 22-man squad that were involved in the World Cup campaign.
Captain Thiago Silva is currently injured so is expected to return but the likes of Marcelo, Dani Alves and Dante have all been left out in addition to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho and Bernard.
Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho is called up again, though, following his excellent recent form and his wonderful 2013/14 campaign.
A number of players from the Brazil domestic league have also been rewarded for their good form in the Brasileirão with selection for the national team.
Corinthians defender Gil and team mate Elias has earned a call-up alongside Cruzeiro duo Everton Ribero and Ricardo Goulart, who have both been excellent this season and will be making their debuts should they be selected against Colombia on September 5th or against Ecuador on September 9th.
Diego Tardelli of Atlético Mineiro has also received a recall, after previously appearing for the national team under Dunga, and Atlético Madrid defender Miranda is selected, as is his former team mate Filipe Luís – now of Chelsea.
Porto right-back Danilo receives a call-up again alongside team mate Alex Sandro and Napoli keeper Rafael Cabral is among just two goalkeepers picked by Dunga, Botafogo’s Jefferson the other keeper selected.
Paris Saint-Germain youngster Marquinhos also returns to the senior national team in the absence of skipper Silva.
Goalkeepers: Jefferson (Botafogo), Rafael Cabral (Napoli)
