Fred misses a penalty as Fluminense defeated 2-0 by Botafogo
Two goals in three minutes helped Botafogo grab bragging rights of Rio de Janiero rivals Fluminense on Sunday evening in the Brasileirão.
Second half goals from Daniel and Pablo Zeballos gave Botafogo a crucial 2-0 home vicory and dented Fluminense’s title aspirations.
In a close fought contest, youngster Daniel opened the scoring for the hosts in the 65th minute.
Things then went from bad to worst for Fluminense as they found themselves two goals down just three minutes later.
Paraguayan Pablo Zeballos was the man to double Botafogo’s lead and give them a great opportunity to take three points.
And that is exactly what Vágner Mancini’s team did, although Fluminense should have got on the scoreboard.
Former national team striker Fred was given the opportunity to reduce the arrears after Botafogo’s Júlio César conceded a penalty.
However, Fred was unable to convert the spot kick and Fluminense lost 2-0 and are now seven points behind leaders Cruzeiro.
