Chelsea’s new signing Diego Costa scored a superb goal in the Blues’ 2-0 friendly win against Fenerbahce on Friday but was also the victim of an ugly challenge.

The £32million-signing from Atletico Madrid started the game as a lone striker.

He demonstrated great strength and poise as he picked up the ball with his back to goal and danced his way past three players before calmly placing a low strike past the goalkeeper and into the net.

The game was being held to raise money for the families of the Soma mining disaster in Turkey but there was nothing charitable about Bruno Alves’ nasty two-footed lunge on the Brazilian-born striker.

Costa was lucky not to be injured in the challenge which sparked a furious response from his team-mates.

Branislav Ivanovic rounded off the win for José Mourinho’s men with a goal just minutes later.
