Flamengo manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo has reiterated his belief that the Rio de Janeiro club have the resources to avoid relegation from the top flight of Brazilian football, despite propping up the table after 13 rounds of fixtures.

The head coach recently returned to take charge of Mengao for the fourth time in his career, and the signs are not healthy, with Flamengo having won one time in their past ten league encounters, against rivals Botafogo.

Luxemburgo will not panic, however; he told reporters ahead of Sundays game with Sport Recife: “I believe that Flamengo will not fall. If I did, I would not have come here.”

“And it is with this cast that we will escape this mess, believe me.”

“If Flamengo were a great team, they would not be in the relegation zone. I do not think of players to arrive.”

Despite the negativity surrounding the club’s position, they are in fact only two wins away from 12th place in the table, with another winnable game against Coritiba following the match with Sport.
