Palmeiras head coach Ricardo Gareca praised the debut performance of young Argentine countryman Agustin Allione after his side beat Avai 1-0 in the Copa do Brasil to advance into the final stages of the competition.

Allione moved to the Sao Paulo club recently from Velez Sarsfield and the 19 year-old is an Argentina youth international.

Gareca, whose side are under increasing pressure following a run of seven league matches without a win, told reporters after Wednesday’s cup triumph: “Allione was good.”

“He’s had a fairly rapid adaptation and needs to get to know his teammates but the other three players I have signed have done so pretty quick.”

On the hunt for form, Gareca added: “I think winning is always good. This game was important to keep advancing in the Copa, but we must win in the Brasileirao, we have to improve much more and we know it.”
