Corinthians won the battle of Sao Paulo last night by beating Palmeiras 2-0 and in the process keeping up the pressure on league leaders Cruzeiro.

Managers Mano Menezes and Ricardo Gareca had traded compliments in the lead up to the game after both sides had made a respectable start to their Brasileirao campaigns with the season a third of the way in.

But the experienced Corinthians side managed to grab all three points at the Arena Corinthians as Paulo Guerrero side-footed from 12 yards after being played through by Elias before the same man let in Petros in injury time- although there was more than a hint of fortune about the strike as it rebounded off the keeper and in.

Corinthians now sit five points behind Cruzeiro and next travel to face Coritiba on Sunday; Palmeiras’ next fixture is against Italian side Fiorentina in the Copa EuroAmericana, a friendly tournament in America that will be staged over the coming month.

It adds to a hectic schedule for Palmeiras, who must also include league duties at weekends; they host Bahia on Sunday.
