Former Portugal playmaker Deco was lauded by ex-teammate Lionel Messi in the wake of his farewell match yesterday evening.

A select group of former and current Barcelona and FC Porto players paid tribute to the Brazil-born midfielder, who has retired from the game having won almost evreything, including two Champions League titles.

He finished his career at Fluminense, helping the Rio de Janeiro club win two top flight championships in the space of three seasons.

And Argentine maestro Messi said after last night’s jovial 4-4 draw: “I wanted to be here for this game as a meaning for everything he did as a player.”

“I wanted to be here with Deco. I enjoyed playing with him and the way he has always treated me.”

The pair were together at Barcelona as they lifted the 2005-2006 treble in Spain, a season that heralded the start of one of the greatest club football sides of the modern era.
