Fluminense are preparing to welcome back their talismanic striker Fred after allowing the player an extended leave following the conclusion of the World Cup.

The tournament will offer no great memories to the Brazil forward, having scored only one goal and getting consistently panned in the local and international media for a perceived lack of ability and willing.

But, according to reports in the Brazilian press, the former Lyon man will receive a special welcome from his club colleagues when he returns to training.

Head coach Cristovao Borges said ahead of a potential return to action against Goias on August 3: “I talked with Fred and he is dying to play.”

“Bit I will not force anything. At the Confederations Cup (in 2013) he turned quickly and got hurt. It was a lesson learned.”

Fred joined Fluminense in 2009 from Lyon and has gone on to make almost 100 league appearances for them, including one in which he scored the goal to clinch the 2012 Brasileirao title.
