Atletico Mineiro won their first Recopa Sudamerica title last night after a dramatic extra time win over Argentine outfit Lanus in the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte.

A 4-3 victory on the night meant 5-3 on aggregate, but the match was full of incident and intrigue as Mineiro became the seventh Brazilian winners of the tournament.

The game was level at 2-2 at half time, the home side scoring through Diego Tardelli and Maicosuel, before Lanus scored in the 94th minute to force proceedings into a further 30 minutes.

But Atletico hearts were not to be broken on this occasion, with Lanus scoring two own goals in extra time to undo all of their hard work and gift the trophy to Levir Culpi’s men.

They must now keep celebrations to a minimum as a busy schedule pits them against Sport Recife this weekend in the Brasileirao, but there can be no doubt that the successes of Atletico Mineiro in the past year or so have been maximized with this win.
