‘Ugly duckling’ Chapecoense shocks São Paulo in the Brasileirão
São Paulo were shocked last night by Chapecoense in the Brasileirão and captain Rogério Ceni praised the defensive display of the Serie A new boys.
Chapecoense won promotion to the Brazilian top flight last season and beat São Paulo 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ricardo Conceição.
Legendary goalkeeper Rogério Ceni could only praise the opposition when he spoke to Lancenet after the game.
“They made the proposal to their game to defend very well,” the São Paulo keeper explained.
“It has been a long time since I saw a team defend so well, and as safe defensive as that.”
If São Paulo had beaten Chapecoense then it would have been Rogério Ceni’s 600th victory wearing the Tricolor jersey.
However, Chapecoense goalie Danilo ensured that wouldn’t happen and he praised his opposite number after his team had earned their shock win.
Danilo said: “They are much better, so we had to shut ourselves, score and then play with a ball.
“It is a victory that enters our history, our first away from home, even against São Paulo, which is the team of my idol Rogério Ceni.
“I'm happy with his praises. I can say that for us every game is a final of the World Cup. The Chapecoense is the ugly duckling of the championship, we have to give our best.”
