The 2014 Brasileirão recommenced on Wednesday following a six week break due to Brazil hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Newly-promoted Sport Recife continued their strong start to the season with a surprise 1-0 win over Botafogo. Forward Neto Baiano netted the only goal of the game, as Eduardo Baptista’s side climbed to 4th. Elsewhere, Figueirense moved above Coritiba with a 1-0 victory against the Coxa at the Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira, while Grêmio and Goiás drew 0-0 in Porto Alegre.

On Thursday, a brace from veteran captain Paulo Baier secured an impressive 3-2 win over Fluminense for Criciúma. The Tigre had raced into a three goal lead before late strikes from Darío Conca and Matheus Carvalho set up an exciting finish.

In Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo, who are bottom of the table, were defeated 2-1 by Atlético Paranaense, while 41 year-old goalkeeper Rogério Ceni scored a penalty in São Paulo’s 2-0 win at Bahia and Santos beat Palmeiras 2-0.

Corinthians were also victorious – Paolo Guerrero netted in a 2-1 over Internacional – and they are now 2nd behind holders Cruzeiro, who won 3-1 at home to Vitória.

Atlético Mineiro and Chapecoense don"t make their return until Saturday, when they face Bahia and São Paulo respectively.
