Barcelona defender Adriano Correira will be out for anything up to six weeks after a worrying abnormal heart rhythm was detected during his pre-season medical checks at the Spanish club earlier this week.

The Brazilian wing-back, who has been at the Camp Nou for four years sice moving from Sevilla, had been linked with a move away from the club after new boss Luis Enrique suggested that his versatility was perhaps not enough to hold down a squad place.

However, this latest development could put paid to that notion, and a statement on the club’s official website read: “Adriano Correira has undergone electrophysiological study treatment to treat an abnormal heart rhythm encountered in medical review of pre-season.”

“He is expected to be out of action for approximately four to six weeks. The player will maintain a separate training schedule during this period.”

The Spanish season gets underway on the weekend of August 23 as Barcelona look to eradicate the memory of last season, when they failed to win a major trophy for the first time since 2008.
