The Dutch Football Federation have released a statement thanking Brazil and its residents for hosting the recent World Cup, in which their sdie were knocked out on penalties by Argentina at the semi final stage.

The statement read: “Thanks to the Brazilians for a host we will never forget, for sharing with us your passion for games. You supported us and walked together in our orange parades.”

As colourful a team as any, Netherlands got the World Cup off to an astonishing start by thumping defending champions Spain 5-1 on the tournament’s second day, a result that set the tone for what has been described the best edition in a generation, if not ever.

The Netherlands went on to beat Brazil in the third-place play-off on Brasilia by three goals to nil, thanks to strikes from van Persie, Blind and Wijnaldum.
