Fluminense forward Fred has confirmed that he is retiring from international forward.

The 30 year-old was singled out as one of the scapegoats of Brazil’s disappointing World Cup and has decided to call it a day.

“For me, the Seleção is finished,” he said, as reported by Football Italia. “I take my part of the responsibility. I wanted to do more, as I was not hurt or suffering from an injury, but I say it is everyone’s fault.

“Football gives you many things and takes a great deal away too. We Brazilians have a nasty habit of finding the scapegoat and looking for someone to crucify for failure.

“We do the same in success, trying to find a ‘God’ to take all the credit. We are a team and we were united to the last minute.”
