The Brazilian World Cup squad and staff will share about US$4.9 million in prize money, in spite of their dismal showing in the 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany and 3-0 loss to the Netherlands.

If captain Thiago Silva and his teammates had become champions, they would have received $35 million, or they would have banked $25 million for finishing second, according to LANCE!Net.

Speaking to the press after Saturday’s defeat to the Netherlands, Silva said: “We tried to respond, but we could not. We know that all is not wrong, but it’s an elimination that makes us sad. But life has to go on.”
