Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger says he feels sorry for Brazil following last night’s one-sided destruction in Belo Horizonte in which the World Cup hosts succumbed to a 7-1 defeat.

The Bayern Munich playmaker, a stand out performer as the Europeans incredibly led 5-0 at the break, told reporters after the game: “The sorrow is strong. But I would like to apologise to Brazil.”

“Respectfully, we try to play football and score goals. For us, this cup is a dream.”

“We are really enjoying the Brazilian people, this has meant the Brazilian team have made a big role in the tournament.”

The forlorn World Cup hosts Brazil will now face either Argentina or Holland in the third-place play-off in Brasilia this Saturday, the day before Germany go on to compete for the right to be champions at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
