Former Italy defender Alessandro Nesta, who won the World Cup in 2006 and two career Champions League titles with AC Milan, has labelled Brazil captain Thiago Silva as the best centre back on the planet.

In his sony.net column, Nesta described fellow Milan alumnus Silva as a modern day great: “I remember when he arrived in Italy, nobody knew him but we immediately understood him as a strong player. He’s the perfect defender in modern football.”

“He can play well with the ball, he’s fast, his concentration is excellent, and he is careful. He is the complete player.”

“And in defence, where I look much of the time, they (Brazil) have the best in the world. They might need that against James Rodriguez and Colombia. I like David Luiz very much, I believe he forms together with Thiago Silva the most talented defensive pair of them all.”

Brazil’s game with Colombia in Fortaleza kicks off at 2100 BST this evening; you can follow all the live action here on Sambafoot from an hour before kick off.
