Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta ha stressed the importance to Barcelona of keeping hold of Daniel Alves ahead of the new season, with the Brazil right back having been linked with numerous moves away from the Catalan giants.

In his column for sony.net, ex-Valencia star Mendieta said: “Barcelona have some thinking to do about the future of Dani Alves. It is a difficult decision- selling a player like him can be dangerous if you do not have a good replacement.”

“His performances have not been as expected this year but he is one of the best players in his position, an offensive back.”

“If the player is ready to leave, it’s important to have someone to replace him. If Alves does stay and they sign (Juan) Cuadrado, he will have rivalry but competition is always a good thing in a team.”

The aforementioned Cuadrado will line up against Alves when Colobia meet Brazil in the Quarter Final of the World Cup tomorrow in Fortaleza.
