Brazil striker Fred, much maligned before and during the current World Cup, has taken to social media to praise those who have supported him when he has been struggling in front of goal; he broke his tournament duck by netting in the 4-1 win over Cameroon on Monday evening.

A post on the Fluminense forward’s official Facebook page read: “You never know the power you have until the only alternative is to be strong. In the Confederations Cup, as well as other times in my lifeI had to find the strength to react.”

“My reverence after the goal yesterday was not only for those that were in the stadium and cheered it; it was for all those who, like me, took a ton of stick.”

In last summer’s Confederations Cup tournament, Fred went through a similar drought at the start of the competition, but ended up being the top scorer. How he and his country would relish history repeating itself.
