Cameroon crashed out of Group A and became the third team to exit the 2014 World Cup within the opening week after they were brushed aside by a rampant Croatia in Manaus last night.

The African side, who face Brazil on Monday, offered very little in the way of resistance and were further punished by the red card picked up by Barcelona’s Alex Song just before half time.

Goals from Olic, Perisic and a double courtesy of Mario Mandzukic consigned Cameroon to defeat and leaves them facing the prospect of Brazil with nothing to play for except pride; they follow world champions Spain and Australia in being eliminated so far.

This constitutes good news for the hosts, who know that they must win in Brasilia in four days’ time in order to avoid a likely meeting with the Netherlands in the second round of this year’s competition.
