Internazionale defender Jonathan has conceded it was probably for the best that he wasn’t called up by Italy for the World Cup.

Jonathan is Brazilian but has never represented his home nation and is eligible to represent the Azzurri.

However, the 28-year-old feels it is probably for the best because he still dreams of representing his country. Football Italia quoted Jonathan, after he spoke to Terra.

“It’s true, I could have been called up by Italy but in the end it didn’t happen and I’m fine with that,” Jonathan said.

“Now I will have a chance with Brazil after the World Cup. Maybe Prandelli understood that. I am Brazilian and I want to play in a World Cup with Brazil.”

Even though Jonathan felt it was for the best, he would have given his all for Italy had he been called up by Cesare Prandelli.

The Inter defender concluded by admitting he just doesn’t feel Italian, he said: “I am a footballer and I would still take the Azzurri chance if it meant playing in an international tournament.

“What did Prandelli say? That he didn’t think I was convinced, but that he would think about it in case.

“I’m not Italian, I’m 100 per cent Brazilian, although I am happy in Milan.”
