FC Barcelona right back Daniel Alves has gone with the majority of pundits across the globe and picked out one of the fiur tournament favourites as the likely winners of the impending World Cup, as the competition draws tantalisingly near.

The former Sevilla defender told a press conference in Rio de Janeiro: “Firsty out of respect to Spain, as the reigning champions, they will always be among the favourites.”

“I like Germany, they have great players, Argentina have a spectacular attack, but Brazil are the favourites, along with Spain, because we have the crowd behind us.”

The pair met in the final of the Confederations Cup last summer, with Brazil dismantling their visitors in a 3-0 final, but the World Cup hosts have struggled somewhat in their recent tournament warm-up games.

Brazil v Croatia gets the competition underway this Thursday at 2100hrs GMT; follow all the action in our live updates from before kick off.
