World Cup second favourites Argentina secured a comfortable warm-up victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Buenos Aires in a week in which some of the tournament’s heavweight sides have struggled to dismiss opposition that they seemingly should have.

The Argentines, who are seen as the biggest threat to Brazil at this summer’s competition, strolled to a win thanks to goals from Rodrigo Palacio, Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez in their penultimate game before the World Cup gets underway.

The result maintains momentum for the South Americans, who have not lost since October, and comes after other fancied teams toiled in their own preparations; Germany drew 2-2 with Cameroon at the weekend and Italy remarkably only managed a draw against European minnows Luxembourg yesterday evening.

Argentina line up in Group F of the World Cup alongside Bosnia-Hercegovina, Iran and Nigeria.

Their final warm-up game comes against Slovenia in Buenos Aires this coming Saturday.
