Fiorentina midfielder Rômulo has reportedly claimed he chose to pull out of Italy 23-man FIFA World Cup squad.

The 27 year-old, who was born in Brazil, is believed to have initially been selected by Azzurri Head Coach Cesare Prandelli, but has seemingly neglected the call up due to injury problems.

“Prandelli had included me in the 23,” stated the Pelotas, according to Corriere della Sera, as reported by Football Italia.

“I told him that I was at 70 per cent, it did not seem right that a teammate would sit out whilst being fine.”

Rômulo earned his place in Italy’s provisional FIFA World Cup squad with a stellar campaign on loan at Hellas Verona. The winger scored six goals and provided eight assists to help the newly-promoted side to a surprise 10th place finish.
