Italy team doctor Enrico Castellacci has confirmed Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo is out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The 29 year-old, who has been capped 58 times at international level, suffered a fractured tibia in Italy’s 0-0 draw with Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

“It’s what we feared, a fractured tibia,” Castellacci told Rai, as reported by Sky Sports.

“It will probably need some months, Riccardo is out of the World Cup. He didn’t deserve this.”

Italy Head Coach Cesare Prandelli is yet to name is final 23-man squad, so it’s unlikely he will call up another player as a replacement, but the loss of Montolivo is a big blow to his preparations.
