Emerson Sheik and Lucio were caught up in a war of words during Botafogo’s 2-0 win at Palmeiras last night, with the Qatar international accusing the former Brazil defender of homophobic abuse whilst the game was being played.

Goals from Bolatti and Zeballos overshadowed a fine three points for the visitors as Sheik claimed the former Selecao captain taunted him throughout proceedings, but Lucio hit back in an interview with SporTV after the game.

“It is not my character. I prefer to keep my level. No wonder I was a long time in the Selecao and in Europe. You only have to look at the history and character and compare it.”

And, in relation to a police investigation surrounding Sheik’s potential involvement in a smuggling affair, Lucio added: “Just watch the news on smuggling and several other news I could call into question. But it is not my character.”

The result of yesterday’s game leaves both teams in mid-table ahead of the break for the World Cup, Botafogo’s points taking them out of the bottom three of the championship.
