Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta has suggested that Brazil-born Diego Costa should not have the opportunity to play for the defending champions at this summer’s World Cup because the player is too volatile for the Spanish style of football.

Mendieta, who won 40 caps for Los Rojos, told sony.net: “Is he the type of player that will fit in wih selection? I’m not so sure.”

“Obviously he plays very aggressively and sometimes I think he pushes his rivals to the limits. That does not fit in with the Spanish philosophy.”

Having represented the country of his birth in two friendlies, Costa decided to change allegiance to where he has spent his professional career and many Brazilians have lamented the fact, especially considering the hosts’ perceived lack of options in the final third.
